What happens during Cataract Surgery?

During cataract surgery.

You will arrive at one of our conveniently located surgery centers at Specialty Surgery Center or 90210 Surgery Center in Beverly Hills, CA. After check-in and moving to the preoperative area, your eye will be numbed with eye drops. You may also be given a medicine to help you relax.
During the procedure, mild sedation is used. You may see light and movement during the procedure, typically lasting about 15 minutes.
Your surgeon looks through a special microscope to perform the surgery. Small incisions (cuts, created by blade or a laser ) near the edge of your cornea are made. The surgeon uses these incisions to reach the lens in your eye. Using very small instruments, we will break up the cloudy cataract and remove it. Then a new clear lens is placed inside the eye.
Usually your surgeon will not need to stitch the incisions closed. These “self sealing” incisions will close by themselves over time. A shield will be placed over your eye to protect it while you heal from surgery.
You will rest in a recovery area for about 30 minutes. Then you will be ready to go home with a follow up the next day.
