Understanding Cataracts and Their Symptoms

Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or dim vision. Most commonly caused by aging, they can also result from injuries, certain medications, or health conditions like diabetes.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • Sensitivity to glare or bright lights
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Frequent changes in glasses prescription

Left untreated, cataracts can significantly impact your quality of life — but they are highly treatable with modern laser surgery and advanced IOLs.

What to Expect During Laser Cataract Surgery With Our Team in Los Angeles

Cataract surgery typically takes just 15 minutes.
Cataract surgery typically takes just 15 minutes.

Initial Exam

Before laser cataract surgery at our Los Angeles eye center, your doctor will conduct a detailed exam and take measurements to select the right lens implant for you. The chosen IOL will be matched to your vision needs — including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or presbyopia — to ensure optimal clarity and comfort.

Pre-Op

In the days before surgery, you’ll receive detailed instructions to prepare. This may include avoiding certain medications, using prescribed eye drops, and fasting the morning of your surgery. These steps help ensure a smooth experience and reduce the risk of complications during your surgical procedure.

Anesthesia and Sedation

To keep you comfortable, your surgical procedure will be performed under topical anesthesia and gentle IV sedation. You’ll remain relaxed and pain-free throughout the procedure. Most patients describe only mild pressure, if anything, during this quick and effective treatment.

Cataract Removal

Using a femtosecond laser, a tiny incision — typically 3mm or less — is made to access the cloudy lens. This cutting-edge technique allows for precise liquefaction using ultrasound or laser energy. The lens is then gently removed, setting the stage for IOL placement that restores clarity and reduces long-term vision problems.

IOL Placement

Once the clouded lens is removed, a flexible lens implant is inserted through the tiny incision. This step is the core of modern cataract surgery. No stitches are needed, as the incision self-seals.

Post-Op

Once the procedure is complete, a protective eye shield will be placed over your treated eye. Most patients experience improved vision almost immediately, with minimal discomfort. You’ll be prescribed eye drops to help prevent infection and promote healing. While strenuous activity should be avoided for a few days, many return to daily routines as early as the next day. Follow-up visits ensure your recovery is on track and your eye care remains personalized.

Dr. Kenesevic Comes Highly Recommended

“Dr. Kenesevic was able to get me in for cataract surgery in conjunction with my Retinologist with wonderful results. Before surgery I was not able to drive due to a deep “fog” in front of my eyes. That fog is gone! I drive with confidence. Dr. K. told me I would most likely need glasses for reading, and I do, but with only 2x magnification as opposed to 5x before surgery. I highly recommend him and his staff for cataract surgery!” - Karen M., 5-Star Review
